A Clinical Study of Small Bowel Obstruction


Abstract
We reviewed 101 cases of mechanical small bowel obstruction who were treated at Dong-guk university Pohang hospital from Jan 1989 to Dec. 1991. The results of study were as follows.
1) The most prevalent age group was the first decade and male to female ratio was 1.5: 1.
2) The most common causes were postoperative adhesion in 60 cases (59.4%) and intussusceptions in 27. cases (26.7%).
3) The previous abdominal operations leading to intestinal obstruction were appendectomy in 20 cases (33.3%), small bowel operation in 11 cases (18.3%), gastroduodenal operation in 11 cases (18.3%), and., gynecologic operation in 10 cases (16.7%).
4) The interval between previous operation and¢¥ admission was under 6 months in 19 cases (31.7%).
5) The interval between development of symptoms and admission was under 24 hours in 42 cases (70%).
6) Among 66 cases of operations, manual reduction was done in 26 cases(39.4%), adhesiolysis in 18 cases (27.3%), and resection in
15 cases (22.7%).
7) Postoperative complications occurred in 8 case (28.5%) among 28 cases and the most common complication was wound. infection (4 cases).
8) The strangulation occurred in 8 , cases among 28 cases operated by postoperative adhesion, and 1 patient died due to sepsis, developed by delayed operation.
